Frizzy hair? Struggling to keep it under control? Not sure what to do to tame the main?
As a stylist, we very often have clients come in and see us who are suffering from dry, split ends. We are asked to make your hair look healthy, shiny and smooth, but when we start showing you how much hair we would need to take off to do that, especially if it is over an inch or more, we have a response that goes like this, ‘I only want you to take off the ends, I don’t want to lose any length’. Sound familiar?
Unfortunately, we are not magicians, although I do wish sometimes, I could have a Harry Potter magic wand about my persons some times.
It is our job to teach you, our clients, how to properly look after your hair, especially your ends, at home so when you come back in to us, you don’t feel like we are your enemy
Here are my top tips for you to help your hair look beautiful and health for as long as possible and prevent split and dry ends from happing
No1. Brushing v combing
Brushing hair when the hair is wet is a big no no!!
Not just for the curly haired friends amongst us, but also the straight, wavy, short or long-haired people, in fact, everyone’s hair should never be brushed when wet (unless when using a wet brush).
Bristles are far to harsh on wet hair. When hair is wet the elasticity is at its weakest (think of an elastic band, the more its pulled, the more it becomes brittle), especially if the hair has not been conditioned. The brush will rip away at the hair instead of gently brushing out those pesky knots
Starting from the top and pulling knots down to the ends causes the you to spend extra time pulling and aggressively trying to detangle increases the chances of breakage significantly. All you are doing is bunching all the knots together and then you have one big ball of matts to try and get through.
When it’s the dreaded ‘washing my hair day’, my advice is to use a good detangling conditioner and a wide tooth comb, and start working the knots out from the ends first, and make you way up to the root area in easy-to-handle sections.
Then if you like to brush your hair, invest in a really good wet brush like a tangle teaser, and wet brush over what they have already combed out.
The best conditioner to use is something like Wella’s Nutri Enrich Conditioner. This has lots of incredible moisturisers like Jojoba to prevent future breakage and adds hydration and strength to the hair. Its so important to use a good conditioner every single time you wash their hair
No.2 Drying your hair to aggressively
Are you guilty of being rough with the towel when towel drying your hair?
Then I bet you dry you hair on the fastest and hottest heat setting that the hairdryer goes up to get it over and done with as quickly as possible. And then you probably use straighteners or some sort of added heated tool afterwards as well?
If so, all that aggressive heat and rubbing will really cause a lot of split and dry ends to form
Your hair is at its most vulnerable and weakest when it is wet. I would try and encourage you to invest in a lovely soft towel like a microfiber towel to gently squeeze and pat your hair dry, DO NOT RUB your hair when it is wet, this just causes more stress on the hair, drying and splitting those ends out further, causing more knots which then causes more tugging and aggressive brushing or combing.
By squeezing and patting dry, you will stop the never-ending cycle that causes weakness.
Also, I would try and encourage you to let your hair dry naturally as much as possible before styling
No.3 Choosing the wrong products
You need to know the difference between good professional products and the cheaper super market brands.
By using a professional product range, you are getting high-quality ingredients which will help promote healthier, shinier, more moisturised hair which looks glossy and rich.
You need less product to do the same, if not better job than cheaper brands so in the long run, not only will their hair be healthier, it will save you money as you do not need to use as much product as you would of a cheaper brand.
Cheaper products are usually full of harsher chemicals which can strip the natural oils from the hair which causes weakness and damage which contributes to the cause of breakage and split, dry ends. They can also cause your colour to fade so much more quickly, which you have probably just spent over £100 creating the perfect look and then you strip the colour out with shampoos and conditioners that are supposed to help keep the colour in the hair for longer, which means more money spent in the salon re colouring your hair sooner than you would need to.
I am a Wella salon owner through and through. My colour, my backwash and styling products are 100% Wella through and through.
I spend time assessing your hair and deciding which range I should recommend to you depending on the issues you are having. I then place the products I am using in front of you on the styling station so you can feel and smell the products for your self, and you can ask me any questions you may have about them, so I can help you achieve your hair goals more effectively.
No.4 Don’t ignore the split, dry ends that are already there!
Once the hair has started becoming split and dry, some clients neglect their hair so the damage keeps on spreading further and further up the hair. The further it travels, the more that will need to be cut off, the more you will hate us as the professional.
A good hair cut is really the only solution for split or dry ends, but there are a few things you can do yourselves at home to reduce the damage.
Hair Masks!! Simple!! Once a week, using a hair mask which will nourish and strengthen your hair will ultimately make the hair less prone to breakage and dryness.
This can be done either at home or in the salon. I always recommend that my clients try and use some heat to help the mask to really penetrate down deep into the hair shaft. I advise you to shampoo your hair the second you get in the shower or bath. Apply your mask, and then do the rest of your routine. The longer your hair is tide up in a clip with the steam from the shower helping the treatment penetrate deeper, the better the result will be. Then, rinse the mask/treatment of as the last thing you do in your routine just before getting out the bath or shower.
And there we have it, my top 4 tips to help you to have the beautiful shiny, glossy healthy hair you have always dreamed of!
I hope that has helped you some what in the fight against split, dry ends and needing less cut off every time you come and see me in the salon for a hair cut
Introducing True Grey
Do you want to embrace your silver or grey hair?
If the answer is yes then Obsession Hair and Beauty has the perfect new launch to make your hair shine brighter than ever before – True Grey.
The True Grey range Silver glow is a new oxidative silver revitalizing treatment, for naturally grey hair. Free of commitment. Free of damage. Now, I can offer your naturally grey hair more than just a haircut. With 7 grey based oxidative toners which mimic the natural hues of beautiful grey hair.
Either applied as a full head or an express service, True Grey will revolutionise the way you feel about your grey hair.
Since lock down, there’s a new demographic of clients that have really embraced and welcomed their natural greys over the past year or so. True Grey is a genius way to to give you a beautiful shiny, gloss, anti yellow effect that is not a colour, but a pigmented treatment – it’s completely peroxide and ammonia free.
You might have moved away from permanent colour to embrace your grey hair, but a 100% grey look doesn’t suit everyone’s complexion. So this is for people who want to reclaim the salt and pepper hues they once had.
True Grey gives gorgeous tonal effects on natural grey hair – there’s no lift, no permanency and the colour fades on tone. It can only be used on virgin grey hair and it’s designed to mimic the natural highs and lows of grey hair (think Judi Dench!).
It can either be used in placement to create natural looking sections – you could isolate areas to be coloured darker for example, or as an all-over treatment.
A hair conditioning mask that colours?
We know it sounds too good to be true, but the Colour Fresh Mask is making it possible – and you can do it yourself at home. As hydrating as it is statement-making, this nourishing treatment is so much more than a mask. In just 10 minutes, it can boost your professional colour or lend a playful twist of colour to your locks, all while delivering moisture.

WHAT IS THE COLOUR FRESH MASK?
The Colour Fresh Mask is the perfect combination of temporary colour and complete care; a treatment that revives and refreshes your hair colour, while keeping strands silky-smooth and moisturised. If you’re looking for a way to boost salon colour between pro appointments, this is your go-to, allowing you to get a speedy refresh at home. Here’s why you’ll love it…
1. IT GIVES YOU THAT COLOR FRESH FINISH
If you’ve tried Wella Professionals’ colour portfolio – from demi-permanent to permanent colour – you’ll know how glossy, rich and lustrous the finish can be. The Colour Fresh Mask gives a similar effect, helping to maintain or transform your salon hue with megawatt shine and a dose of temporary pigment.
2. IT FADES TRUE TO TONE
Unlike other temporary and semi-permanent colours, the Colour Fresh Mask fade true to tone, meaning the hue you choose will maintain the same colour direction as it gradually washes out. It simply becomes softer and subtler over time. Plus, because it’s so gentle on locks, you can use it every week. We recommend adding it to your weekly pamper routine for a quick pick-me-up.
3. IT TRULY CARES FOR HAIR
This is the kindest colour you could choose for your hair. It’s a silicone-free, zero-damage formula that treats your strands to a cocktail of rich moisturisers, from argan oil to avocado oil. The Colour Fresh Mask also reduces hair breakage during combing, with the cuticle-smoothing power making strands ultra-manageable. Plus, it’s free from animal-derived ingredients.
4. IT’S SUPER-QUICK AND SUPER-EASY
Giving you visible results in just 10 minutes, the Colour Fresh Mask is ultra-speedy, with a creamy consistency that makes it easy to apply. This means it’s ideal for first timers who are looking to upgrade their shade.
HOW BOLD WILL IT GO?
As with all hair colour – temporary or not – that flawless result depends on the colour of your base, as well as the condition and porosity of your strands. Hair that’s more porous is more absorbent, which means the colour is likely to be extra noticeable and, in some cases, will last for longer. The Colour Fresh Mask also shows up brightest on hair that’s naturally blonde or has been pre-lightened. Want to see for yourself? Check out this demo of Blue applied to different base hues.
HOW TO USE THE COLOR FRESH MASK AT HOME
Let’s talk application. Note to colourists: you’ll want to memorize these tips, so you can talk clients through them when they ask about maintaining their salon shade.
Doing it yourself at home? No problem. Here are the steps…
1. SHAMPOO AND TOWEL DRY HAIR
So far, so easy, right?
2. USE PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND PUT A TOWEL AROUND YOUR SHOULDERS
We recommend a pre-loved towel or even a t-shirt – something you don’t mind getting hair colour on.
3. APPLY YOUR FAVORITE COLOR FRESH MASK GENEROUSLY
Smooth it through hair section by section, then use a wide toothed comb to distribute the mask evenly. Next, leave it to develop for 10 minutes. If hair is long, you could even twist it up into a topknot while you wait.
4. RINSE WELL, STYLE AND GO
Skip conditioner – the mask is all you need. It will leave locks soft, smooth, manageable and ultra-moisturised.
THE COLOR FRESH MASK COLLECTION
There are 11 temporary colours to try – seven natural hues and five vibrant pigments – allowing you to simply shift the tone or go for a full transformation. Let’s break each wash-in, wash-out mask down…
1. PEARL BLONDE
Pearl Blonde is perfect for existing platinum or icy blondes who are looking to maintain that professional colour, while neutralising any warm tones. The mask gets hair looking shimmery-fresh, all without dramatically adding to or altering the colour.
22. LILAC FROST
Also designed for use on already-blonde locks, Lilac Frost’s anti-yellow formula takes Pearl Blonde’s neutralisation one step further. This cool hue is giving us chills.
33. GOLDEN GLOSS
Who doesn’t want a Golden Gloss? Made for light blondes or blonde highlights, it adds a softly gilded glow. Just remember: the colour from the tube sometimes looks darker than the end result.
44. CARAMEL GLAZE
Like Golden Gloss but deeper, Caramel Glaze gives medium blondes a richer finish, and helps to maintain sophisticated brunette balayage for longer. We all know caramel hair is trending this season. This easy, speedy mask might be the quickest way for you to unlock the look.
55. CHOCOLATE TOUCH
Enhance chocolate brown hair with Chocolate Touch. This deliciously indulgent mask adds a dose of glossy shine to brunette locks that are looking a little lackluster. It’s also ideal for lending depth to hair that has lightened too much, or for refreshing brunette balayage looks.
66. ROSE BLAZE
Rose lovers, rejoice. With a hint of a cool pinky tint, Rose Blaze creates a rose gold or rose brown mane, depending on your existing base colour. The rules are simple: the lighter the hair, the brighter the rose. If you’re blonde, you’re going to see the most vivid effects from this trend-setting hue.
77. COPPER GLOW
The ultimate autumn hair colour, copper is set to be big for the coming season. Use this radiant mask to set strawberry blondes aglow or give medium brunettes an auburn finish. A must-have for all red heads.
Pink – pure and simple. Apply this bold, bright mask to pre-lightened or blonde hair, or use it to maintain the Colour Fresh CREATE High Magenta hue from the salon.
On existing red hair colours, this cool crimson is going to look incredible. Also try it on light-medium blonde hair for a temporary scarlet makeover that turns heads. #redhairdontcare
Blue always makes a statement. Add a denim finish to blonde locks or elevate an existing Colour Fresh CREATE New Blue base with this ultra-striking mask. You’ll need a clean, cool blonde base to start with for a true blue finish. If you’re a warmer blonde, you’ll see more of a teal result.
Cool, minty-fresh and flawless, this pastel hue turns blonde hair into a marine dream. Apply all over or smooth through mid-lengths and ends for the most mesmerising #minthair balayage yet.
I have been trying to figure out for years how I can run a gender neutral salon.
