![]() As a stylist, we very often have clients come in and see us who are suffering from dry, split ends. We are asked to make your hair look healthy, shiny and smooth, but when we start showing you how much hair we would need to take off to do that, especially if it is over an inch or more, we have a response that goes like this, ‘I only want you to take off the ends, I don’t want to lose any length’. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, we are not magicians, although I do wish sometimes, I could have a Harry Potter magic wand about my persons some times. It is our job to teach you, our clients, how to properly look after your hair, especially your ends, at home so when you come back in to us, you don’t feel like we are your enemy Here are my top tips for you to help your hair look beautiful and health for as long as possible and prevent split and dry ends from happing No1. Brushing v combing Brushing hair when the hair is wet is a big no no!! Not just for the curly haired friends amongst us, but also the straight, wavy, short or long-haired people, in fact, everyone’s hair should never be brushed when wet (unless when using a wet brush). Bristles are far to harsh on wet hair. When hair is wet the elasticity is at its weakest (think of an elastic band, the more its pulled, the more it becomes brittle), especially if the hair has not been conditioned. The brush will rip away at the hair instead of gently brushing out those pesky knots Starting from the top and pulling knots down to the ends causes the you to spend extra time pulling and aggressively trying to detangle increases the chances of breakage significantly. All you are doing is bunching all the knots together and then you have one big ball of matts to try and get through. The solution? When it’s the dreaded ‘washing my hair day’, my advice is to use a good detangling conditioner and a wide tooth comb, and start working the knots out from the ends first, and make you way up to the root area in easy-to-handle sections. Then if you like to brush your hair, invest in a really good wet brush like a tangle teaser, and wet brush over what they have already combed out. The best conditioner to use is something like Wella’s Nutri Enrich Conditioner. This has lots of incredible moisturisers like Jojoba to prevent future breakage and adds hydration and strength to the hair. Its so important to use a good conditioner every single time you wash their hair No.2 Drying your hair to aggressively Are you guilty of being rough with the towel when towel drying your hair? Then I bet you dry you hair on the fastest and hottest heat setting that the hairdryer goes up to get it over and done with as quickly as possible. And then you probably use straighteners or some sort of added heated tool afterwards as well? If so, all that aggressive heat and rubbing will really cause a lot of split and dry ends to form The Solution? Your hair is at its most vulnerable and weakest when it is wet. I would try and encourage you to invest in a lovely soft towel like a microfiber towel to gently squeeze and pat your hair dry, DO NOT RUB your hair when it is wet, this just causes more stress on the hair, drying and splitting those ends out further, causing more knots which then causes more tugging and aggressive brushing or combing. By squeezing and patting dry, you will stop the never-ending cycle that causes weakness. Also, I would try and encourage you to let your hair dry naturally as much as possible before styling No.3 Choosing the wrong products You need to know the difference between good professional products and the cheaper super market brands. By using a professional product range, you are getting high-quality ingredients which will help promote healthier, shinier, more moisturised hair which looks glossy and rich. You need less product to do the same, if not better job than cheaper brands so in the long run, not only will their hair be healthier, it will save you money as you do not need to use as much product as you would of a cheaper brand. Cheaper products are usually full of harsher chemicals which can strip the natural oils from the hair which causes weakness and damage which contributes to the cause of breakage and split, dry ends. They can also cause your colour to fade so much more quickly, which you have probably just spent over £100 creating the perfect look and then you strip the colour out with shampoos and conditioners that are supposed to help keep the colour in the hair for longer, which means more money spent in the salon re colouring your hair sooner than you would need to. I am a Wella salon owner through and through. My colour, my backwash and styling products are 100% Wella through and through. I spend time assessing your hair and deciding which range I should recommend to you depending on the issues you are having. I then place the products I am using in front of you on the styling station so you can feel and smell the products for your self, and you can ask me any questions you may have about them, so I can help you achieve your hair goals more effectively. No.4 Don’t ignore the split, dry ends that are already there! Once the hair has started becoming split and dry, some clients neglect their hair so the damage keeps on spreading further and further up the hair. The further it travels, the more that will need to be cut off, the more you will hate us as the professional. A good hair cut is really the only solution for split or dry ends, but there are a few things you can do yourselves at home to reduce the damage. The Solution? Hair Masks!! Simple!! Once a week, using a hair mask which will nourish and strengthen your hair will ultimately make the hair less prone to breakage and dryness. This can be done either at home or in the salon. I always recommend that my clients try and use some heat to help the mask to really penetrate down deep into the hair shaft. I advise you to shampoo your hair the second you get in the shower or bath. Apply your mask, and then do the rest of your routine. The longer your hair is tide up in a clip with the steam from the shower helping the treatment penetrate deeper, the better the result will be. Then, rinse the mask/treatment of as the last thing you do in your routine just before getting out the bath or shower. And there we have it, my top 4 tips to help you to have the beautiful shiny, glossy healthy hair you have always dreamed of! I hope that has helped you some what in the fight against split, dry ends and needing less cut off every time you come and see me in the salon for a hair cut |
